Quick Tips For Housebreaking A Puppy

Posted by Dog Trainer on February 21st, 2010

Housebreaking a puppy is not difficult if you are committed and patient. Remembering that you are working with a baby that is in a stage of development where they can pick up bad habits will help you when you are trying to plan your potty training strategy.

Puppies can learn to go potty outside very quickly if you are consistent and do not over-react. When you want to learn how to potty train a puppy quickly and easily, following a few simple tips will get you started. It will be important that you not yell at your puppy or rub their nose in a mess. Puppies do not learn from this kind of discipline. They often will get more confused about where they are supposed to do because everywhere they sniff, they will smell the mess, which tells their brain that it is okay to go in that spot.

While some people prefer to use newspaper training for their puppy, it is often more effective if you just start training your dog to go outside from the start. Most people have a difficult time training their puppy to go outside after it has “learned” to go on a newspaper in the home. In addition, if any newspaper is every left on the floor by accident it will likely become a potty.

Puppies work very well with a schedule. Plan on taking your puppy out when you get up in the morning, right after they eat or drink, and right before bedtime. Developing this habit will help your puppy to go potty outside when they are supposed to. You also do not want to feed your puppy food or snacks two hours before bedtime. If they eat before bedtime, they will probably have an accident during the night.

If you dog starts sniffing or turning in circles, take it outside, to do it’s business. This is one of the main signs that a puppy will give when it is looking for a place to potty. You will also want to take your pet out after they have been playing.

There will be accidents and messes. The tip here is to keep from reacting negatively. Ignore your dog and clean the mess as quickly as possible. Be sure to spray the area with deodorizer so there is no potty scent. When puppy goes outside to do their business praise them, when they have an accident inside, ignore them. The puppy will learn very quickly to do their business outside to get attention.

Cues are one of the greatest tips for potty training. If you feed your dog canned food, then you are already aware that they will come the minute they hear the can opener. Use this technique as a training tool. Using a bell or timer set it for 45 minutes or an hour and when the bell rings, put the puppy outside to go potty.

If you are consistent with this method you will find that when they hear a bell, they will expect to go outside. Another twist on this is to use a little silver bell. If you tie it by the door, when your dog needs to go outside, it will ring the bell. This is a very easy and time saving “trick” to teach a dog. Creating habits is one of the great tips for housebreaking a puppy quickly and easily.

Habits Of Dogs

Posted by Dog Trainer on January 2nd, 2010

That quality, which will be discussed now, because of its importance, is emphasis in a separate section. This is the ability to form habits and follow them until the end of life. Habits of dogs, like humans, are harmful and beneficial (in terms of rights, of course).

In order make dog educated, you should form the habit of since it’s the very beginning, which are convenient and safe for the owner and others, to make (sometimes by force) follow these habits in all situations, thus perpetuating the stereotype of a dog’s dynamic behavior through which the dog’s behavior is predictable.

In most cases, dogs form habits by their own, often against the will of its owners, but with the indispensable involvement. Such habits can be both dangerous to others, and completely harmless.

Let us consider, for example, the formation of such a common habit, when the dog, having let anyone enter the apartment does not give a man to go out from it. The fact that any dog that does not have a developed distrust of outsiders and does not have a reflex of its territory can let anyone enter into the apartment. The dog simply does not afraid of the incoming person, so defensive reaction does not occur. The owner opens the door, the dog, excited by the arrival of the guest, is happily waving its tail. After a while, having calmed down, the dog goes to its place, often located in close proximity to the front door, or if it is just too hot, it falls under the door, where it is cooler, as it blows from under the door. Guest is going to go then. And he gets up, dresses, and freezes in indecision - the dog lies as the partition off his exit. Having noticed caution and hesitation in human behavior, the dog alerts also now. And since dogs are usually afraid of what they do not understand, a manifestation of a defensive reaction in the active form may occur. If the situation described is repeated, the dog remembers the very situation so as its behavior in this situation and the behavior of guests. And because the dog likes to be strong, likes when some is afraid of it, it would always try to repeat a situation in which it may be able not only to be in the spotlight, but to show its unclaimed service quality. The result of this situation fixing might look like the described above one. The dog, having seen the guest is going to go home is consciously going towards the door and waits for the guest, as a sort of ambush.

But, even if the education of the dog was not being conducted for a long time, and the dog has already grown and managed to acquire a set of habits that do not quite suits the owner, there is no need to despair. Habits of dogs are is in many ways, the habits of the owner. After all, the dog depends on the person in everything beginning from food, and ending by communication. So the dog can not get rid of the habits that impede a dog’s owner in living with its own, until the owner does not change its habits in relation to the dog. Then the dog adjusts to the host and, accordingly, changes its behavior.
