A Brief Overview in Advanced Obedience Dog Training

Posted by Dog Trainer on May 28th, 2010

Advanced obedience is to a dog what putting down the toilet seat is to a man - it takes patience in constant reeducation but it is possible. Dog obedience training is among the most rewarding experiences between a dog and his master. You are not just doing your own self a favor; you are giving your pet a happier and fuller life. Obedient canines are well-adjusted, self-assured and mentally quicker. You can be secure in his behavior even if you leave him alone with strangers.

The most essential thing to remember in attempting to teach your dog is to establish your position as the superior in your relationship. When he understands that you are his master, it is much simpler to teach him the commands he is expected to obey. Confusing the animal in this regard can be risky; he will be assertive and strive to dominate you. Don’t overcompensate and be excessively harsh to show you’re the boss; be firm, stand your ground and correct this unfavorable trait as soon as you see it rearing its ugly head.

Make your leadership known by using a strong and sure voice. When you say “Sit!” gently guide him in the desired position firmly. You may have to go through several tries with each command, especially in the initial stages. Progression from basic to more advanced obedience training is relatively simpler once your dog understands the patterns you’ve established in your teaching classes.

Reward training, or positive reinforcement training is rewarding your dog with doggie treats or praise for correctly doing the command. It is themost effective way to train your pet; it’s what he understands. Praise your pet every time he does what you say correctly. Sometimes, this is easy to overlook but take care not to. Dogs will get confused easily and recognizing good behavior every time will ensure that he will remember what is right.

Inversely, reprimand the animal whenever he commits a mistake. Do it during the mistake and not when it is past so the dog will see the error of his ways. Scolding him will also emphasize the distinction between what is right from what is bad. For example, if he starts finding the unidentified dirt on his path fascinating enough to eat, reprimand him then and there. Then put appropriate food before him to eat. When he starts eating his own set meal, be profuse in your praise.

To be able to progress in dog obedience training, keep sessions short and frequent. Be repetitive in what you teach. Don’t restrict teaching your dog during “school time” or set time blocks. Otherwise, he won’t feel like studying during the most part of the day.

Dogs in movies awe you with the complexity of the stunts asked of them. But they all started with sit. Begin with the basics and climb your way up. With patience and consistency your pet will advance to more challenging commands like growl, leave it, fetch and attack. Employ the same principles in how you trained him before and you will taste success in the higher levels.

There, now that you’ve got working knowledge of a professional trainer’s guide to advanced obedience training for dogs, it’s about time to roll up your sleeves, get the happy dog and start training!

Easy Potty Training Techniques to be Used on Dogs

Posted by Dog Trainer on March 20th, 2010

If you have just picked out a new dog or puppy and plan to keep him or her inside, your first priority should be to get your pet house trained. There are several puppy potty training methods that can help you out and which one you choose will depend in large part on where you live and what your lifestyle is.

One dog potty training technique is called paper training. Basically what you do is train your dog to go to the bathroom on paper in your house. Praising them when they do what you want is important and getting after them (in a loving yet stern manner) when they make a mess in the house. You can combine this with the next technique to encourage them to go outside when possible, but use the paper if they have to go inside.

Training your dog to go to the bathroom outside is one of the most common methods of house training. One way to go about doing this is to take your new dog or puppy out frequently and praise them when they go to the bathroom to let them know they did what you want. As I mentioned above, make sure you scold them when they make a mess in the house. If you want to combine techniques, you can praise them a little bit when they go on the paper and praise them excessively when they go outside. This will help them know you want them to go outside, but it is ok if they have to use the paper.

Another possible technique to use is called crate training and works well for people who can’t let their dog out frequently.
