Cats And Kittens Are Being Fed Raw Meals And Thriving

Posted by Dog Trainer on March 5th, 2010

People are tired of their cats being incessantly ill and finally want to take matters into their own hands. They are considering diet might be the culprit and some are switching to raw cat foods for a change. Shocking to plenty of skeptics, these raw cats are becoming healthy.

Introducing your feline to a raw food diet could be just about the greatest thing that you can do for its health and well being. Cats that are given a rigorously controlled diet of raw food have a tendency to live longer, more zestful lives and don’t seem to have the same maladies that are plaguing many cats nowadays as a result of cooked-food diets.

Cooked commercial cat food is sometimes made from animals that died of illness or reject animal pieces of animals that were fed steroids. This commercial food has often been determined to be poisoned with chemicals and lethal bacteria that might potentially harm your animal.

For this reason, choosing a raw food diet for your animal could be seen as a wise decision. The downside though is that going raw could be a big responsibility on the part of the owner, especially if the animal has been mostly raised on commercial food . The modification to raw can be tricky, and preparing certain handmade recipes can be grueling. However, the health advantages of feeding your feline mate a well balanced raw food diet utterly trump the disadvantages, and the cost savings for food and veterinary care over your cats life are totally worth it.

Raw organic cat food is generally available, but it can be high-priced, so most raw foodists opt to make their own by following recipes. As an alternative, there are supplements that may be added to fresh ground beef or cut beef chunks and water which can provide all the balanced nutrition your pet requires to stay healthy. These ‘all-in-one’ kind of products are extremely convenient, but won’t be thought about as pure and as fresh as preparing it on your own following a recipe at home. The supplements work great for many raw foodists, yet others like to prepare everything from scratch themselves from the beginning, giving them control over all the ingredients and the production. In addition, there are others who don’t wish to use animal products at all.

You can easily find raw cat food dishes on the web that may meet your needs and finances and at the same time meet the nutritional needs of your pets. When preparing your own, it’s important to chop up the plant material totally so that is effectively consumed by your pet. It has been advised that raw cats food is best made with exclusively above ground plants, with carrots being an exception to the rule. Herbs could be integrated in a few cases but should be added in small amounts during the adjustment time frame. Information involving plant grinding devices and any knives you may need is generally incorporated with the recipes that will be needing them.

This can sound like plenty of involvement, but if there is some reality to the health advantages of “going raw”, and your feline buddy truly means something to you, the labor of love is most certainly valuable.

Pro-Active Cat Health Care Reduces The Risk Of Hairballs

Posted by Dog Trainer on January 3rd, 2010

Hairballs can be a nightmare, not least for the pet owner, but also for the pet. They are caused by a build up of fur and lack of brushing. As we all know, cat fur is very thick and if it doesn’t get groomed regularly then furballs accumulate which the cat can then end up swallowing. Once these lodge in the cat’s throat, choking can ensue. Its not a pleasant thing to watch and it can be very dangerous.

Cat health care is all about looking after all aspects of your cat. Keep your eyes peeled for hairballs and matted fur. Groom your cat daily to make sure there is no loose fur that can get stuck in its throat. This is a great activity as you are helping the cat’s health and also your pet will love being stroked. Just be sure to be gentle to make the cat as relaxed as possible.

There are some cats with quite long fur and a vet might have some extra cat health care tips for you. Take Persian cats as an example – they have beautiful long fur but if it ends up forming hairballs, this could be very risky for them. You can’t stop the cat from licking itself, as they all do it, which is why hairballs are such a problem. Luckily, dogs don’t suffer with this hairball problem, as they don’t clean themselves by licking the fur. Cats have to lick their fur to keep clean which is why they end up with copious amounts of hair in their throats!

The process is simple – as soon as the hairball gets into the stomach, the cat tries to cough it up. This is when you will hear choking sounds and it can make pet owners quite nervous when they hear this, as they don’t know how to deal with it. The cat must finish coughing up the hairball, so keep an eye on it. Look out for any worrying signs and just make sure the cat is okay after coughing the fur up. There are also plenty of treatments out there for help with preventing hairballs, so speak with a vet to get the best advice.
