For most dog owners, dogs are like a member of the family. They don’t necessarily get the same status as kids, grandparents, or even cousins — but they don’t usually get treated like furniture, either. Our family was no exception to this rule. How to move from Ohio to Texas? This is something a family had to face. Having to move long distance with three large dogs.

How were we going to fit three large dogs into a car that fit seven people, when there were seven people? With our five children on the long trip to Texas. We knew they wouldn’t really fit in the car. We were not going to use moving services for our dogs. We were going to have to move them ourselves. We decided just to make a game out of it. We treated it like a long camping trip, even the kids got involved. We knew we would be crowded in the car. We decided instead of getting upset we would try to make it a fun trip.

Taking two cars was not an option since we had already arranged for car transport. We were not sure if auto shipping was the right thing to do. We made arrangements before thinking about the dogs. Since the dongs already thought they were lapdogs, we decided that was where they would ride. Even though they were too big to be considered lapdogs.

The five kids loved it. They prepared by putting blankets on the floors, stuffing the back of the family’s H2 with pillows, and using duct tape to install a couple of bowls in the rear of the car. There was chew toys and leashes, and we decided to stop every hour to hour-and-a-half to let the dogs relieve themselves. The result? We got to see more of the country then we would have seen.

The veterinarian suggested a light sedative or small dose of antihistamine would help keep the dogs calm. This definitely helped in keeping the dogs calm|. Because of allergies, we had given them to the dogs before. Some dogs are more susceptible to allergies. Some, like ours, have skin allergies. We decided to go with the vet’s recommendation and it really did the trick. We actually found that it was completely unnecessary to stop as often as we were stopping. The dogs were not only calm, but they did not need to be walked as often. For as young as they are, the dogs spent most of the trip asleep and so did the kids.
